Demo features high-tech gadgets
that make life better for seniors
SANFORD Though many adults fear physical limitations and the loss of independence as they grow older, emerging technology is making life easier and more enjoyable for seniors.
Many of those devices will be on display Mar. 14 at the Enrichment Center in Sanford during a demonstration sponsored by the LCI Assistive Technology Center. The free demonstration begins at 11 a.m. and is open to the public.
"There are all sorts of concerns people have," says Julie Dutchess, who coordinates the center and will be leading the session. "The problem is that most people don't know what's out there to help with day-to-day life and, even if they did, some may be hesitant to ask for help.
"That's why this demonstration is so important. It's a fun, relaxed way for everyone to see all the ways technology can improve their lives."
Dutchess has seen an explosion in innovative technology designed to overcome limitations of all kinds, since the Assisstive Technology Center opened three years ago to help local residents experience greater personal and economic success.
The best-known technology has helped seniors overcome losses in vision, hearing and the range of motion, often due to arthritis. But plenty of less-glamorous innovations, Dutchess says, make it easier to do all sorts of every-day tasks.
Magnetic jewelry clasps, talking watches, sewing aids, pocket-size recorders and even a hands-free, one-touch can opener help with everything from getting dressed for a night on the town to remembering important events.
Dutchess will demonstrate dozens of high-tech gadgets during the hour-long presentation, plus give advice on how to select products and make an informed purchase.
Founded in 1967, LCI primarily serves residents of Lee, Chatham, Harnett and Moore counties. The nonprofit organization provides manufacturing assistance and trained employees for business and industry, helps people with disabilities enjoy their greatest possible independence, and produces a full range of trophies, awards and engraving.
