Renowned expert to demonstrate
technology for disabled at workshop
SANFORD R.J. Cooper, a renowned authority on using technology to expand opportunity for people with disabilities, will demonstrate equipment and teaching techniques at a one-day workshop on June 7 in Sanford.
The workshop on what is known as "assistive technology" is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center in Sanford. Both morning and afternoon demonstrations are free and open to the public. Registration and a $8 fee are required only for those electing to attend a conference luncheon from noon to 1 p.m. The event is cosponsored by LCI Inc. and Central Carolina Community College.
"R.J. Cooper is an amazing presenter, who is very energetic and passionate about helping individuals create more opportunities for themselves through the use of assisted technology," said Julie Dutchess, who coordinates assistive technology for LCI. "The excitement is incredible at his presentations, and I always walk away from his workshops having learned something new and found a different way to help the people I evaluate and train."
An internationally-renowned pioneer in his field, Cooper will demonstrate computer hardware, software an teaching methods by working with eight people during the workshop. His goal is to help each one accomplish some task they were not able to do before the seminar.
Assistive technology like that being demonstrated at the workshops allows people to do things once considered impossible. In some cases, it allows people once considered "unemployable" to become productive and make a living. For all, the technology offers more control over life and generates a sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
Dutchess believes the workshop will intrigue not only those directly assisting people with disabilities, but anyone who works with students, employees or computers. "There's nobody who knows more about assistive technology than R.J. Cooper," she said. "He's designed and created many of the devices he'll be presenting, so this is an excellent way for people to observe this technology at work."
