Assistive Technology conference
demonstrates technology, methods

SANFORD — Technology and teaching methods designed to help people with disabilities become more independent were on display earlier this week at the R.J. Cooper Assistive Technology Conference and Workshop in Sanford.

Wednesday's event at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center was sponsored by LCI Inc. and Central Carolina Community College. It was led by Cooper, a pioneer in the field of assistive technology, who demonstrated hardware, software and instructional approaches designed to unleash the ability of those who otherwise could have difficulty learning new skills and finding work.

In one demonstration, James Alston used innovative software called "Spell a Word" to increase his literary skills. Alston also took advantage of a modified keyboard and voice amplifier to make data entry easier.

Cooper helped several other volunteers develop new skills in the free workshop attended by 50 guests, some driving more than three hours to reach the event.

The conference was received with enthusiasm by parents, employment professionals and assistive technology professionals, many saying the hands-on demonstration proved the featured equipment and software were actually practical to use and helpful in developing critical life skills.

"This was wonderful!" wrote one attendee. "I especially enjoyed the ability to see volunteers use the technologies! Thanks."

Founded in 1967, LCI primarily serves residents of Lee, Chatham, Harnett and Moore counties. The nonprofit organization provides manufacturing assistance and trained employees for business and industry, helps people with disabilities enjoy their greatest possible independence, and produces a full range of trophies, awards and engraving.
